CEIP La Laguna Restores Third Fourth-Grade Class After Family Complaints

CEIP La Laguna Restores Third Fourth-Grade Class After Family Complaints

Families at CEIP La Laguna in Sariñena, Huesca, have been demanding the opening of a third fourth-grade class since the start of the school year. The grade currently has 49 students. They argued that the students had been divided into three classes in third grade, meaning that increasing class sizes could affect the attention provided to students. The Government of Aragón, for its part, said that an “additional allocation” was granted last school year, allowing the school to effectively split the class, although the Department’s management system (GIR) “officially showed two groups at all times.” When planning the current fourth-grade school year, “the initial planning began with the two classes registered in the GIR,” it stressed. However, the government said that although 49 students would not normally warrant opening a new class, the Department’s organisational criteria establish that “it is also not appropriate to close a unit that had already been operating in practice.” Accordingly, to resolve the discrepancy and align the administrative situation with the school’s reality, it has ordered the formal opening of a third fourth-grade class and the allocation of an additional teacher. With this decision, the Department intends to regularise the class that was officially “hidden.” After reviewing all the data with the Huesca Education Inspectorate, it certified that the class in question “did not appear in the official records.” The decision, therefore, is to “legalise the situation, meaning that these students, who had been attending school in three classes, will have that right respected, which we understand to have been acquired.” This resolves the discrepancy between the practice carried out at the school and the administrative reality during the 2026/27 school year and until this group reaches sixth grade.

Parents and students at CPI Parque Venecia take up brooms and cleaning cloths to clean their own school: “Unacceptable”

Parents and students at CPI Parque Venecia take up brooms and cleaning cloths to clean their own school: “Unacceptable”

Four industrial sacks. That is how much rubbish the more than 50 mothers, fathers and students from Zaragoza’s CPI Parque Venecia removed on Tuesday afternoon during a cleaning drive to “ensure the sanitary conditions of the school’s facilities”. Families say there has been no cleaning service in the new secondary school building since the start of the school year, almost a month ago, forcing users of the school to take on the task themselves. During the clean-up, families cleaned a total of 20 classrooms and 12 bathrooms, using cleaning supplies purchased and paid for entirely by the school’s own Parents’ Association (AMPA). The urgency was so great that the AMPA even had to cancel the School Council meeting scheduled for that afternoon, allowing its members to join the school cleaning effort. For the association, the problem stems from “the budget shortfall allocated by the DGA for the cleaning service”. They claim that the Government of Aragon “has transferred only €10,000 of the €15,000 needed to cover the service until the end of the year”. Thus, to ensure the school was properly cleaned, families say the school itself has had to cover the €5,000 shortfall. “This seriously harms educational quality,” the AMPA says, arguing that the money “will have to be taken from essential budget lines intended to purchase school supplies, laboratory equipment and musical instruments”. They also stress that there is “deep uncertainty” within the educational community about the short-term future. “From December onwards, the funds will run out completely, and it is not known what measures will be adopted to keep the school clean,” they add.

More than 4,200 children to take part in school flu vaccination campaign in Aragon

More than 4,200 children to take part in school flu vaccination campaign in Aragon

The school flu vaccination campaign has registered 4,208 participants in its third edition, compared with 2,973 last season, representing an increase of 41.5%. The registration period, opened through a specific SaludInforma form, ended last Monday, September 28. The regional government said families had responded with “a great reception” to an initiative that has also grown in the number of participating schools, with 159 schools across the region joining this year compared with 127 in the previous campaign. The school vaccination programme will run from October 5 to 19 and is exclusively aimed at pupils in the second cycle of Early Childhood Education, namely children aged 3, 4 and 5. Nursing professionals from health centres will travel to schools to administer the vaccine during school hours, generally over one or two days agreed between each school and its reference health centre. Children will only be vaccinated at the school where they are enrolled, using an intranasal vaccine. Immunisation in schools was launched in Aragon three seasons ago, with 789 participants in its first edition. This year’s figure is more than five times the initial participation. FROM OCTOBER 19 AT HEALTH CENTRES From October 19, childhood flu vaccination, which reached 43.4% coverage last season, will begin at health centres and accredited private vaccination centres for all children aged between 6 months and 11 years. This expansion is the main new feature of the 2026/27 campaign, as childhood vaccination previously extended only up to age 7. Families of children aged 3 to 5 who have not registered for the school campaign, have been unable to get vaccinated at their school or whose school is not taking part in the initiative will be able to vaccinate them free of charge at their health centre, requesting an appointment through SaludInforma when self-booking opens for this age group. Vaccinating children protects them against flu and its possible complications while also helping to reduce transmission of the virus in their surroundings, particularly to more vulnerable people such as older adults and those with chronic illnesses. Children aged 24 months to 11 years receive a live attenuated intranasal vaccine, while those aged 6 to 23 months receive a cell-culture vaccine. The flu vaccination campaign began on September 28 for residents of care homes, health and social care workers, pregnant women and people with high dependency needs or very high risk. On October 19, in addition to children, people over 80 and those at high risk will be included, while the remaining groups, including people over 60 and others with risk factors, will join on November 3.
