Each day, the liturgical calendar recalls the memory of men and women who left a significant mark on the history of Christianity. October 19 is especially dedicated to St. Paul of the Cross, a prominent figure known for promoting religious life and founding a congregation that continues its work in different countries.

ST. PAUL OF THE CROSS

St. Paul of the Cross was born on January 3, 1694, in Ovada, Italy, into a Christian family. His birth name was Paul Francis Danei, and from a young age he showed a deep inclination toward spirituality and a life of prayer. After going through various personal and religious experiences, he decided to dedicate his life to preaching and to encouraging reflection on the suffering and death of Jesus Christ.

In 1720, he began developing the project for a new religious community centered on remembering Christ’s Passion. This initiative led to the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ, known as the Passionists, whose members combined contemplative life with popular preaching. Paul of the Cross was ordained a priest in 1727 and devoted much of his life to organizing religious missions and expanding his congregation throughout Italy.

St. Paul of the Cross died on October 18, 1775, in Rome, after a life devoted to pastoral work and the formation of religious communities. He was beatified in 1853 by Pope Pius IX and canonized in 1867 by the same pontiff. The Church celebrates his feast day each October 19, especially remembering his spirituality, dedication to preaching and role as the founder of the Passionists.

WHY ARE SAINTS CELEBRATED?

The Christian calendar of saints originated in the tradition of remembering each day the saints and blesseds recognized by the Church. These commemorations highlight the lives and witness of people who stood out for their faith and the example they left throughout their lives.

Over time, the celebration of saints also became linked to name days, meaning that many people celebrate their own saint’s day on the day the Church remembers the saint after whom they were named. This custom remains deeply rooted in many countries with Christian traditions.
