The event is inspired by Thailand's traditional lantern festivals and aims to turn Zaragoza's lake into a vast carpet of lights. The afternoon will begin with music and various activities and, as dusk arrives, the most eagerly awaited moment will come: hundreds of lights floating on the water at the same time.
AN AFTERNOON OF MUSIC, FOOD AND LANTERNS
The Water Lantern Festival will not be limited to the moment when the lanterns are released. Organizers have planned the event as an experience to enjoy throughout the afternoon, with live music and performances for attendees before the lanterns are lit.
There will also be food trucks and a bar serving food and drinks during the event. In this way, the festival will combine the visual spectacle of the illuminated lake with a more relaxed atmosphere designed for families, friends and couples.
BIODEGRADABLE, FLAMELESS LANTERNS
One of the event's particular features is that the lanterns will not use real flames. The lanterns will be illuminated with LED candles, while their structure will be made of biodegradable rice paper and a wooden base.
In addition, once the lantern release is over, the organizing team will collect the lanterns from the water to prevent waste from being left in the surroundings. The organizers say they will remove all the lanterns once the experience ends.
WHEN AND WHERE THE WATER LANTERN FESTIVAL WILL TAKE PLACE
Zaragoza's first Water Lantern Festival will take place on Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, at El Lago de Puerto Venecia. Tickets can still be purchased on the festival's official website, priced at 17.52 euros for a general ticket on Saturday and 19.12 euros on Sunday. Discounts are also available for packages for couples or groups of four.
The event is coming to Zaragoza after being held in different cities around the world, joining a trend of nighttime festivals in which lighting and public participation become the main attractions. In this case, each attendee will have the chance to leave their own message on a lantern and watch it float alongside the others when the sun goes down.
