More public transport, fewer cars: CCOO Aragón proposes measures to reduce workplace accidents

Following the entry into force of the mobility law, many companies must have mobility plans negotiated with trade unions. During this event, contributions from leading speakers were used to address proposals and criteria to take to negotiations at each company and thereby reduce workplace accidents.

"A total of 307 companies in Aragón will soon have to negotiate these sustainable and safe mobility plans with their workers," said Luis Clarimón, CCOO Aragón’s secretary for Occupational Health, Sustainability, Transitions and Territory. The new law establishes that, starting in December this year, companies with more than 250 workers or more than 100 employees per shift must sit down with the employees’ legal representatives to draw up these plans.

The aim of these plans will be to improve the way workers travel between their homes and workplaces, both on their journeys to and from work and during the working day. According to CCOO, the measures should help reduce commuting-related workplace accidents, cut greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy consumption, especially oil consumption.

MEASURES TO REDUCE ACCIDENTS

The proposals include collective and public transport, whenever available, as well as encouraging travel on foot, by bicycle — including electric bicycles — or through car-sharing schemes. The trade union also stresses that collective means of transport are safer, as they record fewer accidents than cars or motorcycles.

"In 2025, there were 2,641 workplace and commuting-related accidents resulting in leave in Aragón, of which 1,128 involved men and 1,513 involved women," Clarimón said. This figure makes it more important than ever to pay greater attention to prevention. The CCOO Aragón secretary said that some companies in the region have already introduced measures such as bus routes and car-sharing initiatives.

The proposals include shared transport services between several companies in the same industrial estate and the use of apps that make it possible to find out the real-time location of buses and their pickup points.
