Fundación Dfa discusses accessibility and healthcare for people with disabilities in Zaragoza

Fundación Dfa will hold a new meeting in its “Dfa, 50 Years Towards Inclusion” series this Tuesday, October 6, examining healthcare from the perspective of disability care. The event will take place at Zaragoza’s Espacio Ibercaja Xplora and begin at noon.

The debate will go beyond physical accessibility and address difficulties related to communication and understandable information, the adaptation of diagnostic tests and procedures, appointment times and support, transportation, and the real possibility of attending a medical consultation. It will also consider the extent to which these barriers can ultimately create an additional health problem when they prevent or delay care.

The event will bring together the perspectives of the health authorities, healthcare professionals, private healthcare providers, patient associations and disability organisations themselves to analyse which barriers continue to hinder truly accessible, inclusive and person-centred healthcare.

PREVENTION, INEQUALITIES AND HUMANISATION

Prevention will be another central issue, along with the consequences of waiting lists and the difficulties involved in changing a specialist appointment. The focus will also be on the situation across Aragon and inequalities in access to healthcare in rural areas.

The humanisation of healthcare will also be the central theme of the panel. The meeting will additionally take a specific look at women with disabilities, addressing the accessibility of care, sexual and reproductive health, and the persistence of paternalistic or infantilising attitudes that can limit their autonomy and their ability to make decisions about their own health and bodies.

Participants will include Cristina Sarasa, director general of Care and Humanisation at the Aragon Government’s Department of Health; Javier Arredondo, president of the Aragon Patient Forum (FAP); Alfredo Pérez, ASISA’s provincial delegate in Zaragoza; and Pilar Moreno, director of Social Centres at Fundación Dfa. Journalist Ana Esteban will moderate the debate.

The event is part of Fundación Dfa’s 50th-anniversary commemorative programme. The programme began by focusing on housing accessibility and, after addressing issues such as women and disability, independent living, mobility and employment, this new meeting turns to health to identify the changes that are still needed. The series is supported by Ibercaja in Zaragoza and Fundación Ibercaja in Huesca and Teruel.
