Aragon strengthens environmental oversight and action against lindane

Aragon's government wants to accelerate pending measures to tackle lindane contamination. Its main goals include permanently closing Bailín's secure cell, dismantling Inquinosa's former facilities and advancing work at the Sardas landfill before 2030.

Director General of Environmental Quality José Montoya told the Cortes of Aragon that the government will concentrate technical, human and financial resources on these measures. Tackling this historic contamination will be one of the department's priorities during the legislative term.

REVIEW OF WASTE REGULATIONS

Alongside these measures, the regional government wants to review the Aragonese Waste Catalogue, in force since 2008, to bring it into line with technological advances and eliminate rules or procedures that have become obsolete. It will also study changes to facilitate new forms of recycling and waste recovery.

LESS BUREAUCRACY, MORE OVERSIGHT

Another area of work will be reducing environmental bureaucracy by simplifying forms, eliminating duplicate procedures and improving coordination among public administrations, companies and waste managers.

In addition, inspections will be strengthened in activities with the greatest environmental risk, and new technologies will be introduced to improve monitoring. These include sensors, early-warning systems and artificial intelligence tools to detect possible pollution incidents more quickly.
