Aragon Raises Average Income and Records Spain’s Lowest Income Inequality

Aragon’s average income has risen while income inequality has fallen slightly. The region is Spain’s least unequal according to the Gini index, which dropped to 28.7 points, while average net income per person reached €16,356 a year, 5.8% more than in 2023. These are the 2024 results of the Household Income Distribution Atlas, published by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE).
Aragon Raises Average Income and Records Spain’s Lowest Income Inequality

The Gini index measures inequality in income distribution: the lower its value, the more equal the distribution. In Aragon, the indicator fell from 28.8 points in 2023 to 28.7 in 2024, a one-tenth reduction that keeps the region below the national figure of 31.9 points. The difference with Spain is therefore 3.2 points.

Aragon is followed by Extremadura and Galicia, both with 28.8 points, and then Cantabria and the Basque Country, with 29. At the opposite end among Spain’s autonomous communities is Madrid, with an index of 35 points. Aragon therefore records the lowest figure among the country’s 17 autonomous communities.

AVERAGE INCOME EXCEEDS €16,000 PER PERSON

Average net income per person in Aragon increased by €899 in one year, rising from €15,457 to €16,356. The region exceeds the Spanish average, set at €15,948, by €408 and ranks seventh among the autonomous communities with the highest income per person, the same position as in 2023.

The trend is also evident when households are analyzed. Average net household income reached €39,899 a year, compared with €37,669 in the previous period. The increase was €2,230, or 5.9%, according to the Atlas data.

All three Aragonese provinces recorded increases. Zaragoza had the highest average net income per person, at €16,551, followed by Huesca, at €16,090, and Teruel, at €15,364. Huesca recorded the largest percentage increase, at 6.3%, compared with 5.8% in Zaragoza and 5.4% in Teruel.

INCOME DIFFERENCES WITHIN ARAGON

Some 28.7% of Aragon’s municipalities are among the 25% with the highest net income per person in Spain, a group starting at €17,157 a year. At the other end of the scale, 10.7% of localities belong to the quarter of Spanish municipalities with the lowest average incomes, with earnings of up to €13,407 per person.

In the provincial capitals, the INE analyzes census sections, territorial divisions used to compile statistics. Zaragoza has 14.7% of its sections in the very-high-income category, with annual net income per person exceeding €21,652. These sections account for 9.1% in Teruel and 2.9% in Huesca.

In the very-low-income bracket, below €11,322 in annual net income per person, Huesca has 5.7% of its census sections, compared with 2.6% in Zaragoza. In Teruel, no section falls below that threshold, which is calculated based on the average income of residents in each area.
