Amazon steps up its commitment to Aragón with more investment, new facilities and 1,800 jobs

Fifteen years after arriving in Spain, Amazon says its activity helps support nearly 200,000 jobs across its workforce, supply chain workers and positions created by the thousands of small and medium-sized businesses selling through its platform. The company, which has invested more than €25 billion in the country since 2011, is also preparing new facilities in Aragón that will increase its economic and logistics footprint.

Amazon currently has more than 30,000 permanent employees in Spain, working across more than 400 different professional profiles. They are joined by more than 50,000 people providing services at its logistics centers and offices, around 53,000 indirect jobs and nearly 20,000 induced jobs. In addition, Spanish SMEs selling through Amazon employ more than 45,000 people to manage their digital businesses.

ARAGÓN GAINS IMPORTANCE IN AMAZON’S PLANS

The growth expected in the coming years will have a particular impact on Aragón. Amazon has opened its first distribution center in Spain in Zaragoza and plans to develop new supply chain facilities in the region for the manufacturing, storage and repair of servers. Once the company is fully operational, it estimates that these infrastructures will create around 1,800 additional jobs.

This will be complemented by the expansion of Amazon Web Services (AWS). The company plans to invest €33.7 billion through 2035 in its data centers in Spain, an activity that, according to its estimates, will support the equivalent of an average of 29,900 full-time jobs each year. AWS data centers in Aragón are also part of the technological infrastructure used by services such as Alexa+, the new generation of the assistant based on generative artificial intelligence.

MORE THAN €25 BILLION INVESTED SINCE 2011

The figures are included in the report Amazon in Spain: 15 Years of Impact, prepared by IE University to mark the anniversary of the company’s arrival in the country. Amazon currently operates around 40 logistics facilities, two corporate headquarters, two innovation centers and one AWS cloud infrastructure region. Ruth Díaz, Amazon’s general manager for Spain and Portugal, said the company intends to maintain its commitment to investment, innovation and the creation of opportunities in Spain.

The report also highlights the impact of Amazon’s activity on local economies. In Illescas (Toledo), for example, its two logistics centers employ more than 3,000 people, while Spanish SMEs operating on the platform export products worth more than €1.2 billion a year. Sixty percent of these businesses are located outside Madrid and Barcelona, and nearly 30% operate from rural municipalities.

TECHNOLOGY, SMES AND THE AUDIOVISUAL SECTOR

Amazon’s presence also extends to technology and audiovisual employment. Its research and development centers in Madrid and Barcelona bring together more than 1,000 professionals from over 70 nationalities, while Prime Video has filmed more than 35 original productions in Spain. The company maintains that the continuation of these projects, together with the acquisition and distribution of content produced in Spain, helps generate activity for technical and creative professionals and companies linked to the audiovisual industry.
