PP and PSOE trade barbs in Aragon parliament over housing as Congress debates decrees

Aragon’s PP and PSOE clashed Friday over two housing royal decrees being debated in Congress. The PP called it a government failure, while the PSOE accused Jorge Azcón’s executive of rejecting the measures out of sectarianism.

The debate centers on measures that include, among other issues, protection against evictions for vulnerable people, the extension of certain rental contracts, regulation of seasonal rentals and limits on investment funds’ purchase of housing. Morales argued that the measures could benefit thousands of rental contracts in Aragon, while Cobos questioned the central government’s housing policy: “It has not eased the problem; it has made it worse.”

THE PP ATTACKS SÁNCHEZ’S HOUSING POLICY

Cobos said that what happened in Congress amounted to “the confirmation of a lie and a failure” and criticized the makeup of the current central government. The Popular Party lawmaker recalled that Pedro Sánchez said this would be “the housing legislature” and noted that “it seems housing will mark the end of his time in office.” In her view, the policies approved in recent years “have not eased the problem; they have made it worse.”

The Popular Party spokesperson defended the housing policy pursued by the Aragon Government and Jorge Azcón, with “more than 3,600 initiatives launched in three and a half years.” In contrast, she criticized the central government’s “express decrees without support and without rigor,” which she described as “an exercise in populism aimed at covering up the PSOE’s resounding failure.” Cobos concluded by calling on Sánchez to “call elections.”

THE PSOE CALLS ON THE ARAGON GOVERNMENT TO OFFER ALTERNATIVES

Morales accused Jorge Azcón’s government of rejecting the measures promoted by the central executive “out of sectarianism” and of “turning its back on thousands of Aragonese families.” The Socialist lawmaker argued that “housing is not a problem that affects only one party or one ideology” and highlighted the difficulties young people and families face in accessing housing and paying rent.

The Socialist called for housing policy to look “beyond political colors” and criticized the PP, Vox and Junts for rejecting the measures debated in Congress. He also reproached the Aragon Government for “also refusing to apply instruments allowed under the State Housing Law, such as declaring stressed residential market areas.” He therefore demanded that Azcón “give explanations to Aragonese men and women” and explain “what alternative he offers” families.
