The PAR retains significant territorial strength in terms of the number of mayors and councillors across the three provinces. The party holds 85 mayoralties in the region, with particularly strong representation in Teruel, where it has 61 mayors, well ahead of Huesca (15) and Zaragoza (9). It therefore wants to preserve this asset.
However, as its president Alberto Izquierdo has said, mayors “have the right” to choose other parties to stand for election, and this would not be considered “party switching,” although he believes that those who are PAR members will stand again under the same party name.
A possible alliance with the PP is being considered ahead of the municipal and national elections. Alberto Izquierdo, who is currently an adviser to Jorge Azcón, has said that there has been “a wonderful rapport and an excellent relationship” with the party since the previous legislative term, and it remains to be seen whether they could take a further step. In this regard, he said it was possible for Aragon’s right-wing parties to run on the “same ballot,” just as Chunta Aragonesista is promoting an alliance with other left-wing parties.
All these issues will be discussed at the next executive committee meeting on October 8, after which further meetings will be held to prepare for the two 2027 elections. The aim is to maintain the party’s territorial power after it was left without representation in the Cortes of Aragon on 8 February.
