Aragon's regional parliament censures Urtasun over Sijena paintings stance as PSOE votes against

Aragon's regional parliament censured Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun on Thursday over his comments on the final ruling ordering the return of the Sijena mural paintings, in an initiative put forward by the People's Party. The PSOE's Aragon branch voted against it, while the PP, Vox, Aragon Existe and CHA backed the censure.

PP deputy spokesperson in the regional parliament, Elena Allué, criticized the Socialists' vote and said the PSOE in Aragon “has once again made it clear that when faced with a choice between Aragon and Pedro Sánchez, they always choose Sánchez”. Allué also stressed that CHA lawmakers, who are part of Sumar, the coalition that Urtasun represents in government, did vote in favor of censuring him.

"RULINGS MUST BE ENFORCED"

Allué argued that any government must respect the law, judges, the judiciary and final court rulings. “Rulings are not negotiated; they are enforced. The final ruling says that the works belong to the people of Aragon and must return to Aragon,” the conservative politician said.

The initiative approved by the full chamber criticizes Urtasun for having repeated his attacks on and questioning of a final judicial ruling, for publicly defending the alleged infeasibility of returning the Sijena paintings, and for politically aligning himself with the obstructionist strategy of the MNAC and the Government of Catalonia.

“These statements also constitute a new and serious attack on the independence of the judiciary, adding to the repeated attempts by Pedro Sánchez's government to discredit judges and courts when their rulings do not serve its political interests, undermining the separation of powers and citizens' trust in democratic institutions,” the initiative states.

The resolution also calls on the Spanish Government, the Government of Catalonia and the MNAC to fully and immediately comply, without further delays, with the final ruling ordering the return of the mural paintings from the Chapter House of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Sijena.

It also calls for strict compliance with all deadlines set out in the judicial enforcement timetable and rejects any attempt to suspend, extend, reinterpret or covertly fail to comply with the ruling. Finally, the regional parliament calls on the Spanish Government to use its representation on the MNAC board of trustees to ensure the paintings' return to Aragon.
