To fill those gaps, the City Council has launched an urban tree replacement campaign that will run until March 31, 2027. The plan includes planting 2,589 trees from 51 different species, with an investment of one million euros. Of these, 1,024 will be planted during the final quarter of this year and nearly 1,600 during the first months of 2027. The planned species include hackberry, fruitless white mulberry and Japanese privet.
WHERE THE NEW TREES WILL GO
The new plantings will not be limited to tree pits along the streets. Urban renewal works will add another 1,860 trees during 2026, with major projects in the Las Dolinas de Arcosur park, where 687 have already been planted, and the future El Portillo park, which is expected to add 536 specimens.
New trees will also be planted along avenues and streets such as Navarra, Valencia and Pedro Cerbuna. The Huerva River regeneration project will add another 891 specimens, while El Bosque de los Zaragozanos will contribute 710 and the "Adapt Your Schoolyard" programme, aimed at bringing more greenery to public schools, will add 39.
The planting campaign will reach different neighborhoods, with a particular focus on the Southern District, which will receive 421 trees, Delicias, with 270, and Torrero-La Paz, with 237. A further 217 are planned for Oliver-Valdefierro, and more than 160 each for Las Fuentes and La Almozara. The City Council says the main urban redevelopment projects will end the year with a positive tree balance, meaning that more specimens will have been planted than removed. In addition, 86 trees have been transplanted during the works to give them a new location in the city.
