How Labordeta’s Moving “Somos” with Ara Malikian Brought the 2026 Pilar Festival to a Close

Zaragoza’s 2026 Pilar Festival has come to a close with one of the most moving traditions in its program: the performance of José Antonio Labordeta’s “Somos.” The Ámbar stage at the Fuente de Goya, in Plaza del Pilar, hosted the closing concert this Sunday, October 18, featuring violinist Ara Malikian alongside Nacho del Río, Beatriz Bernad, the Ixena Choir and Iván “Melón” Lewis.

The performance brought together different voices and musical styles around a song that has become one of Aragón’s greatest symbols. Malikian’s violin was one of the main attractions of an edition in which traditional Aragonese music also played a prominent role.

The repertoire prepared for the final night included songs such as "S'ha feito de nuey," by José Lera, performed by Nacho del Río, Beatriz Bernad and Iván "Melón" Lewis; "No quiero traerte flores," with Bernad and Lewis; and "Despacico y callandico," before culminating with the traditional "Somos."

For the final piece, Ara Malikian, Nacho del Río, Beatriz Bernad, the Ixena Choir and Iván "Melón" Lewis joined together. The performance combined the instrumental and vocal talents of artists from different backgrounds to pay tribute to José Antonio Labordeta and one of his best-known compositions.

"Somos" has accompanied the closing of the Pilar Festival for years and has become an especially meaningful farewell for the people of Zaragoza. Previous editions have featured performers such as La Estrella Azul Live in 2024 and Tako in 2025, while this year the organizers opted for a lineup led by the Lebanese-born violinist.

The celebration also came after a final day marked by rain, which forced the city council to suspend various outdoor shows and activities. The "Somos" concert was scheduled to begin at 9:00 p.m., ahead of the fireworks and the final firecracker display planned for 10:30 p.m. at Macanaz Park, bringing Zaragoza’s festivities to a close until next year.
