Virtual reality and a space to experience Goya’s deafness: the “unique in Spain” cultural experience coming to Zaragoza in 2028

2028 will be Goya’s year, and Zaragoza and Aragon, the painter’s birthplace, are preparing “unprecedented cultural experiences” for the bicentenary of his death. Zaragoza Mayor Natalia Chueca highlighted the major exhibition coming to La Lonja in 2027, featuring works never before shown in the city, and especially the exhibition arriving at the same venue a year later. In 2028, residents of Zaragoza will be able to experience the Prado without leaving the Aragonese capital through the immersive project “The Prado of Goya for the people of Zaragoza.”

It will not be a conventional exhibition. In fact, it has been conceived as an “immersive and narrative” experience in which visitors will be able to feel as though they are inside Goya’s mind. La Lonja will be filled with technology, including 360º projections, video mapping and an innovative sound space simulating the painter’s deafness. Visitors will also be able to explore the Prado’s galleries through a virtual reality environment.

“We are talking about two major exhibitions that we are going to organize with the Prado Museum, both of which will be unprecedented cultural experiences in Spain. In 2027, we will exhibit works that have never before been seen in the city, and in 2028, through technology, we will offer the people of Zaragoza the chance to discover all of Goya’s works held by the Prado, since, for obvious reasons, works will not be loaned that year,” said Zaragoza Mayor Natalia Chueca.

MORE CULTURAL PROJECTS AND BICENTENARY MILESTONES IN ZARAGOZA

In addition to the two major exhibitions already mentioned, several other shows will follow, including “Goya and Graphic Journalism,” which will come to La Lonja in the second half of 2027; “Battle of Giants,” focused on pop art and paying tribute to “The Colossus,” which will be shown at the Casa de los Morlanes in late 2026; and an exhibition dedicated to the women in Goya’s life.

The program will also include various audiovisual creation projects, such as the short films in “Zaragoza and Goya, On Film,” the feature-length documentary Passion for Goya (Time Also Paints) and the animated short The Quinta's Ghost. These will be joined by educational initiatives, including Goya-inspired comic workshops for schoolchildren.

The painter’s legacy will also help strengthen Zaragoza’s profile beyond the city through initiatives such as the Goya Cities Network, the creation of a new Goya Tourism Product and the consolidation of the Goya-style Festivals. At the same time, the restoration of the sculptural ensemble of the Monument to Goya in Plaza del Pilar is planned, bringing public space into the program as well.
