The Festival’s official juries have selected nine short films from four countries—Argentina, Switzerland, Australia and Spain—which move on to the decisive final stage of this inaugural edition.

BEST FICTION SHORT FILM AWARD

Several inmates representing the prison’s Film Workshop selected the five finalists from among the 33 fiction short films in competition.

They include works by major filmmakers such as Swiss director Karim Huu Do (“Ne me quitte pas”), considered one of the world’s best new creatives by Dazed magazine and named director of the year by Shots, who is developing his first feature film and a miniseries with NBCUniversal; Argentine director Rodrigo Elizalde (“Amelia”), with more than 20 years of success in Argentina’s film industry; Spanish director José Mª Flores (“La compañía”), featuring an anthology-worthy tracking shot and a candidate for the 2026 Goya Awards; Spaniards Sofía Lopera and Vincenzo Viacava (“Daydreams”), with a masterful work that combines science fiction and human values; and Australian actor, stunt performer and film director Nash Edgerton (“Candy bar”), with more than 30 short films to his name and an extensive career in which he has worked alongside Keanu Reeves, Robert Pattinson, Guy Pearce and Ewan McGregor, among others.

The next step will be their screening in the Assembly Hall. There, all inmates at Daroca prison who wish to attend as jurors will be able to vote for their favorites and decide the winner of the 2026 Best Fiction Short Film Award.

NEW CALL FOR CULTURAL AND CULINARY COMPETITIONS

La Revista La Oca Loca also announced this week, with the collaboration of San Jorge University, the Aragonese Association of Writers, the Aragonese Association of Friends of Books, the “Perdiguer” Film Discussion Club and the TOPI School of Cooking, the cultural competitions for “Poetry, Flash Fiction and Screenwriting” (17th edition) and the culinary competition for “Cooking Recipes” (16th edition).

Both competitions have two separate sections and accept entries submitted from inside prison facilities by inmates and from outside them. The prize will consist of the presentation or mailing of a “Picapedrero Diploma” and a book produced by the inmates of Daroca prison containing the winning literary works and recipes.

Inmates and women inmates from 76 prison facilities—70 in Spain and six abroad, including three in Argentina and one each in Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia—regularly write and collaborate side by side on this digital platform, along with a staff of 186 writers from outside the prison system.

Over the past year, it has received and published more than 100 original articles and works by 110 inmates from the prison system, as well as a similar number submitted by writers from outside it.

The Literary Competitions for Poetry, Screenwriting and Flash Fiction (in their 16th annual edition), as well as the Cooking Recipes competition (in its 15th edition), have broken all participation records: more than 650 works were submitted, over 250 of them from the prison system, along with a record number of participating prison facilities.
